There is sometimes a long distance, a chasm, between where you are and where you want to be. How do you cross the great divide between your dreams and your current reality? What you need is a roadmap to get from one place to the next. Without one, the journey can seem like an impossibility.
There have been times in my life when mentors and spiritual teachers have acted as a roadmap. Those who have been down the path before have pointed the way and have helped me navigate through uncharted territory. Sometimes these teachers have come in the form of an author speaking through a well-timed book. Sometimes they have been spiritual teachers disguised as old friends, and sometimes they have been a random word from a passerby.
All of them have been the result of synchronicity—a seemingly random event—perfectly timed with Divine help to point the way through the unknown maze of transitioning from one reality to a more preferred one. At just the right moment, the next step of the journey has been given. Through all of the transitions and changes in my life I have never traveled alone.
Many times it is tempting to stay where you are because it is familiar. You may hate it, but at least you know how to negotiate the day-to-day reality of where you are. What we don’t often realize is that we don’t have to see the whole road at once in order to begin. What we need to be able to see is the first step.
The first step is always the scariest and we always fear that once we begin we will get stuck in the middle and not know what to do—but when you make the journey with the Spirit, you will find that a bridge shows up just when you need it. God provides bridge builders; people who’ve been down the road before you and who’ve volunteered to help others along the way. What appears random and accidental is the result of the Spirit working on your behalf, matching up those who work in the service of Spirit with those in need.
Jesus acted as a bridge builder showing us the way back to the heart of God. His life of kindness, compassion, and healing coupled with his passion for living the truth of God, even if it meant dying for it, paved the way for us to follow. The promise He gave of the Spirit to live within us and act as a guide provides an internal roadmap for us to follow. The scriptures give us hints and glimpses of the way and those who’ve traveled before provide important bridges and connections for the many crossings through unknown territories.
God is constantly drawing us back towards the heart of our Creator; bringing our life into a bigger, brighter, more fulfilling reality that is in harmony with our soul’s true purpose. With the call to a larger life comes the means with which to accomplish it. What is required is a willingness on our part to begin the journey.
Whatever the change you are trying to make in your life, ask the Spirit for guidance on where to begin. Then listen to see and hear what the first step towards your new life should be. God can be counted on to show the way.
There is a wonderful promise by the prophet Isaiah that speaks of the Spirit and presence of God. It says, “You will see your teacher with your own eyes. Your own ears will hear. Right behind you a voice will say, ‘This is the way you should go.’ Whether to the right or to the left.” With the Spirit as your inner teacher you can trust that you will be led each step of the way.
